Sam Francis is known for his exuberantly colorful, large-scale paintings. His work incorporated elements of Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, Impressionism, and Eastern philosophy.  He was influenced by Pollock, and he is associated with Helen Frankenthaler: “Painting is about the beauty of space and the power of containment.” After 1980 he was very active as a printmaker. Many of his prints were executed at the Litho Shop in Santa Monica CA, which he owned.
