Condition: Excellent. Original canvas. Under UV exam, there does not appear to be inpaint. Framed Dimensions 31 X 36 Inches. Hand-signed by artist, LR front. Signature also verso, along with hand-inscribed title. Frame included.
Emile Albert Gruppé was born 1896 in Rochester, New York. He lived the early years of his life in the Netherlands as his father, Charles P. Gruppé, painted with the Hague School of art and acted as a dealer for the Dutch painters in the United States. The family returned permanently to the States around 1913. Gruppé studied at the National Academy in New York City and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Gruppe made his permanent studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts. From 1940–1970, he ran the Gloucester School of Painting at Rocky Neck, on Smith Cove in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club; the North Shore Art Association (1929-1978); the Rockport Art Association; the Gloucester Society of Artists; the Allied Artists of America; the Longboat Key Art Association; and the Sarasota Art Association.
